In the middle section of the mission office hangs our mission flag or banner. I love the mission logo, which shows the three islands and our motto "Success Through Obedience". When missionaries arrive they sign their name on the left side of the flag, and when they leave they sign on the right side. I thought when it first arrived that we'd never fill it up, but it's going to be full by the time we leave. It's a treasure! We forgot to get signatures of one of the batches coming in so we took the flag around to interviews to have them sign. A couple of days before the next new batch I asked where the flag was and we all got a little nervous until it was found down in Talisay. Then we all heaved a sigh of relieve.

This is the office "staff" we have right now, since March 1. They are Sister Moss (finance secretary), Sister Barclay (baptismal records, supplies & mail), Elder Ehorn and Elder Santos, Assistants, and President & Sister Anderson. The picture is taken in President's office at the mission office. In the background you can see the transfer board. All the pictures of the missionaries are placed in the areas where they are currently serving. It helps us keep track of them.

How about this future missionary? I think he and his sister are such darling kids. All Filipino kids are darling, as a matter of fact! These are Cacho kids. Cachos are a "pioneer" family in Bohol. The parents joined along with their five sons. These kids are 3rd generation church members.

This is the waterfall we climbed to see after crossing Balanan Lake. It's not as "high" as some of the falls we've seen here, but it's so beautiful the way the water falls over the rocks.

This is the view from our window in the Bethel where we stay in Dumaguete. Hard to find a prettier sight. There is a lot of activity on the "boardwalk". It's a gathering place for people. In the early morning there are exercise groups and lots of people walking. In the evening lots of walkers as well.

This is where we almost always sleep when we are in Dumaguete, Negros. It's so nice and clean. The people there know us as we're there every three weeks and they always welcome us back with a big smile on their faces.

I almost forgot about putting pictures on the blog. Hadn't realized it's been since August! This picture was taken at Christmas. Kids "carol" for you at Christmas, and they want to be paid a peso or two. Mostly they come up to your car while you're waiting at a red light, but thse girls were in the parking lot at Makro (PI version of Costco) when I went shopping. They almost always have an "instrument"...this girl was using the plastic bottle. If I remember right there were some small pebbles inside to make some "music." Sometimes the instrument is a wooden stick with a nail in it that has washers to jingle.

Faithful Saints from Lamac came to district conference in Toledo together in this truck. It's a pretty rough road down the mountain, but they are all so happy to have a way to come to conference. Lamac is only about an hour from Toledo, which is a coast town. Many of the children in Lamac have never seen the ocean! Transportation is just too expensive.

We loved having Kent and LaRene here for about a week in January. In this picture we had climbed down some 350 steps to visit Casaroro Falls. It's a fun hike! On the left are our Assistants, Elder Mohring and Elder Hankins. Both have gone home now....it's the story of our lives, constant change!

In March Elder Mark Garcia returned from his mission in Butuan. His family was so happy to greet him, and we're so happy that even though his Dad isn't in the picture, he was at home in Siaton waiting to greet him. The Sister on the right is a branch member, Sister Trinidad who recently returned from her mission.

For about three weeks we had painters here painting the outside of the mission home. Their scaffolding was fascinating. The painters made it themselves by lashing bamboo poles together. They climbed the poles like monkeys!

This is the home for the orphans in Valencia. It was old, but very clean and attended by a nun and some other helpers. They will move into a new home "next door" very soon.

On January 12, 2008 Sister Burton invited me to join the Zamboanguita Primary activity of visiting an orphanage in Valencia, Negros. It was a desire I'd had for a long time, and what a delightful visit! The children were well behaved and performed numerous dances and songs for us. I wanted to take a couple of the children home with me!

NORSU (Negros ORiental State University) campus...the site of an amazing missionary experience on July 15, 2007. We were invited to tell 1000 cadets in the ROTC about the Church. A greeting was given by the District President, then four missionaries presented the first lesson about the restoration. President Anderson offered some remarks, and the Dumaguete District Choir sang a few numbers. Following the presentation, the missionary distributed Joseph Smith History pamphlets to those interested, and got names and contact numbers of the ones who wanted to have the missionaries come to their homes to teach them.

Here's a sample of the new desks we had made for missionary apartments. We took a picture of a desk we liked at a furniture store and had a furniture-maker make this up for us. We got probably 10? That's a sturdy desk and about half the price of the one we copied.

We actually got a P-day! Elder Hodges (front) and Elder Latimer both served in Negros and knew about Casaroro Falls. It was so good to get some exercise. We had a great time with these two Elders. They are so terrific.

Here's where we paid our fee for the hike down to the Falls. I love the sign there....it says "We burn fat. Let's to the trek." There are about 310 steps down (and UP). And then a hike across the river and over boulders. It was a great workout. And the day was a bit overcast so the heat wasn't too bad.

The jeepney couldn't take us all the way back into Dumaguete, so our transportation the rest of the way was in this tricycle. Elder Hodges is the other passenger. Elder Latimer was with us too, but I don't remember where he was at this moment.

Our transportation from Valencia, Negros to Casaroro Falls. This is the inside of the jeepney. The AP's contracted to pay him P900 to drive us up and wait while we hiked, and then bring us back. We're glad his old jeepney took the wear and tear, and not the mission van. It was quite a road!

These boys were the best! They came over to the church from the school across the street, and were watching me clean up in the cultural hall after zone conference. They were hoping I had a basketball, but I didn't happen to have one along:) However, I did give them a few pesos to get some snacks. When I finished cleaning up I went outside and they all clustered around me. I asked them what they had learned in school that day. They are in grade 6, and had been learning about the circulatory system. They told me about all the parts of the heart. Their English was excellent. They wondered why I was in the Philippines so I told them about the church and how it could bless their families. I asked them, if two missionaries ever came to their home, to let them in and listen to them because they had a message that would bless their lives. I wonder if any of them will.... Just some seeds planted and the sower doesn't see the fruit.

I love looking at the unusual fruit at the produce section of the grocery store. This is Durian. I confuse it sometimes with Jack Fruit. This fruit is said to taste like _ _ _ _ but taste like heaven:) On the top to the right are some mangosteen. They are supposed to cure all kinds of health problems. They taste awesome.

Elder Latimer, one of our AP's, arranged for us to go dolphin-watching with the Dumaguete Zone. It was something I've been wanting to do ever since we got here. I LOVE dolphins, and this was quite a show. It was hard to capture with the camera. We saw hundreds of dolphins, and they would swim along next to the boat like we were a playmate or something.

The Caparoso girls, Aya and Ishy (Sarah and Desiree) at McDonalds. They spent the night with us that night. They loved those ice cream cones! I tell these girls I'm their white Lola (Grandma). They love to come to our house, but they look at me a little funny when I tell them that.

Most of the work of making backpacks, etc. is done in a little room out back, but this guy in the selling part does work on straps and such. These bag makers are incredible. They will copy anything. Just show them a picture and tell them some dimensions and they do excellent work.

We're at the bag-makers in Lapu-Lapu. While we were waiting I bought some apples for these little kids. The boy's name is Kevin. Aren't they darling? Getting an apple was a big deal...they ran right over to show their Mom.

There had been some planning to make a special surprise for President Anderson's birthday, April 17, 2007. We were about to have zone conference in Dauis, Bohol and look who greeted us there! Missionaries and members alike. They sang songs and had a big banner and a super birthday card signed by everyone. It was pretty awesome.

The master bedroom. It's hard to see here just how high off the floor the bed is, but the Filipinos who moved us in got a big kick out of it. They figured I'd need to use the stools at the foot of the bed to climb into bed. The FM group added these wonderful window shades because we got way too much morning sun (not that we can ever sleep in, but it makes the room so hot).

I never thought of having a "sofa" in the master bedroom, but this set belongs to the owner and we didn't know where else to put it. We actually enjoy having it so if we want to show friends some church movie, they have a place to sit other than the bed.

The dressing table shown here is part of the "closet room" between the master bedroom and bathroom. I love it! Those little plastic drawers are full of my jewelry. I LOVE the jewelry here. It's so original and inexpensive. Lots of members make it.

Can you believe this enormous bathtub? Most people here have very very small showers, and NO bathtubs. I really do use a stool to climb in, but it's SO comfortable, especially now that there is hot water:) In this picture you can't even see the bottom of the tub.

The patio. There is often a nice breeze on the patio, but the best part is those kalachuchi trees across the street (the trees with the with blossoms). In Hawaii they are known as plumeria. They are so fragrant, especially at night.

The "sewing-ironing-patio" room. Yes, that really is my serger on the table with the Bernina. I'm glad I brought both of them with. Sister Balledos did the rice-planting cross stitch, and I just bought rice-planting hats to go with it. And how about the added touch of a carabao horn? There's a story with that one.... The broken chair from the office is a great sewing chair because I can scoot from the sewing machine to the serger. I've made a few blouses, a skirt, baby shoes (TV booties), and TONS of aprons. But it all gets done in small patches of "extra" time.

We don't quite know what to call this room. It's just a spare room between the bedrooms and it opens onto the patio room. I call it the patio room sometimes. We brought the old table from the condo and put it here so missionaries can do some planning at the table during ZLC. My sewing machine is in this room, and this is where Arlene does the ironing. During ZLC we move the table out onto the patio so there will be more floor space for mattresses.

The "orange" guest room. Check out how we solved the problem of mattress storage:) Piled up on the bed frame and between the frame and the window. This picture was taken just before the new "batch" of missionaries arrived. Arlene put together a "do-it-yourself" guest kit: pillow, sheets, towel, and pillowcase. The missionaries get to make their own beds and put them wherever they can find room on the floor. And if there are only a few, they can sleep on a high bed, like ours! This bedroom can be seen from the front of the house at the left-hand corner. I love all the windows in this house...it's bright and cheery because the windows allow so much light.

This picture is specifically for the people who have lived in Cebu. It shows the addition to the SM shopping mall. The mall is already so huge I used to get lost in it. I told the grocery boy as he was helping me to the car and we're hiking through the mall that on the days I go to the mall I don't have to work out. He thought that was pretty funny.

This dog sniffs every piece of luggage that is about to enter the Shangri-La Hotel. He's still a puppy really, and the man who handles him had fun playing with him. When I was taking the pictures he wasn't aware that I was doing it, and he was so pleased when I showed them to him. He asked if I would send him copies, and I did. I asked him in return to listen to the missionaries!

The American Cemetery in Manila. Very sobering to think that the bodies that lie beneath these crosses are the same ages as our missionaries today. So much better to be a soldier for peace! The picture below is of a man in Toledo who came for a special inteview to be baptized. He has one leg that seems to not have bone, and one arm also. So he uses the good leg and the good arm to get around. He puts a flip flop on the good hand to protect it. He was so happy this day, October 10, to get approval for baptism. It's quite a story!

This is Elder Romulo in Toledo, with a man who came for a special consideration interview for baptism. He has one arm and one leg that apparently don't have bones; whatever the problem they don't work. He puts a flip flop on his good hand and uses it as a foot. He gets around pretty close to the ground. He was very happy this day as he was cleared to be baptized. He has a very positive attitude about life, despite his handicap.

Fourth try on this one! It's not every day you find a vehicle like this in the church parking lot on a Sunday morning! Yes, that is a BIG bunch of bananas. Did you know that a banana tree only produces bananas once in it's life cycle? But the reason they are so plentiful is that a new tree grows up from the roots automatically. Trike drivers usually put a name or a motto on their trike...it's cool this one chose "CTR"...it will easily identify him to members of the church. Likely he brought his entire family to church in this trike.

Ok, third try to get this on the blog! After the river ride we had to spend some more time with the "monkeys." This is one of my favorite pictures of them. They are so small they fit perfectly in the palm of my hand. A typical comment is that people would like to keep them for pets. They are nocturnal, so we are really bothering them when we come during the day.

This is the lobby of the Marco Polo...one of our favorite places to eat. They have a fabulous buffet...we always get our money's worth if we have missionaries with us! The meal costs about 750 pesos, or about $15. That's really pricey for the Philippines. Most of the time when we go out to dinner it costs us about $4 each. We're getting spoiled!

Wonder what on earth this is? It's a banana tree. A little off-center is a ring of green bananas. Coming out of the center of it is a "vine" and hanging from that is the flower of the banana. It's called a "banana heart"...appropriate name, don't you think? It took me awhile to figure that out What tipped me off was a salad at the salad bar of the "Why Not?" restaurant in Dumaguete. It's good salad!

June 23 we rode the barge from Bato on Cebu Island over to Negros Island. This picture is our approach to Negros, a bit north of Dumaguete very near Amlan.

We're about to take our first trike ride from the church to the pier to catch the ferry to Siquijor. Elder Chang and Elder Thomas joined us, and it was pretty crowded. This is a pretty fancy trike because usually the driver doesn't have a windshield.

Here's a close-up of a mango tree. Can youo belive all the mangos are individually wrapped in newspaper bags to protect them from insects? Very labor intensive, yet the most I've paid for them in the off-season is 80 pesos per kilo (1 kilo=2.2 lbs).

The Garcia family following Mark being set apart as a missionary. He will serve in the Davao Mission (south of us). It was a day of mixed emotions...delight in sending off the first missionary from their family, and concern that the father's health will be good enough that he'll still be here on Mark's return in two years.

This is Lony Tupas, our "househelp". She cooks, cleans and does the laundry. Her work week is Monday through Friday eight hours a day. She loves to cook and makes the food look pretty fancy. She's a tiny thing...maybe 5 feet tall. We couldn't do any better at finding a person to work for us.

Our living room, dining room and kitchen, all in one. There are three balconies, two from this room, where the curtains are to the right and straight ahead. It's small, but very nice. Since this picture was taken the old drapes on the upper level have been replaced with vertical blinds, which look much better.

Here's the kitchen in our condo. I love the marble countertops, but I don't love that there is no room around the sink!
